“It’s important for caregivers and all members of the family to ensure senior loved ones are included in activities, and that they get regular socialization weekly,” said Linnea Goodrich, president of Firstat Nursing Services.

Here are three ways to incude senior citizens in family fun.

Set Up a Schedule for Weekly Visits – Enlist a qualified home health care professional to stop by senior homes weekly to check in on older loved ones. Health care providers can keep elderly clients physically and mentally active while checking on all aspects of health needs, including hygiene and nutrition.

Do More Than Invite Older Relatives – As people age, they may not be capable of getting around easily. While there is no set age when mobility becomes an issue, family members should keep an eye on older relatives, watching for signs that may prevent them from attending important family gatherings such as birthdays, anniversaries and holiday parties.

Let Them Host the Party – While it’s unreasonable to expect an elderly relative to do all of the work involved in hosting a party or family event, there are a many ways to bring the party to them. Arrange for family members to supply food and have others arrive early to help set up, allowing seniors to feel connected. Keeping elderly loved ones mentally and emotionally fit requires regular interaction. Consider hosting weekly or monthly game nights or ice-cream parties.
